Auntea (well, Unc!): Melvin "Uncle Mel" Witten â
Topic:Â Choices, discipline, and bouncing back from setbacks

đŹÂ Meet Uncle Mel
Uncle Mel grew up right here in Southeast DC and went from HD Woodson High to Hampton University, then Howard Law â but the road wasnât straight.
He got kicked out his first year of college, worked full-time, and went to UDC at night to finish strong. đđž
Now? Heâs done work with Motown Records, BET, and the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. Heâs living proof that your story doesnât have to be perfect â it just has to be yours.
âYour path isnât always straight. There are cliffs and valleys â but you can always climb back up.â
đŤÂ Sugar Q: âShould I cut off my friend who sells weed?â
Uncle Mel keeps it đŻÂ â if your friendâs out here selling, you need to step back. Even if youâre not doing anything wrong, you could still get caught up.
âYou donât want to take that kind of detour,â he said. âThat one mistake can change everything.â
đĄÂ The Tea:Â
Donât risk your future for someone elseâs choices. Protect your name, your record, and your goals.
đąÂ Sugar Q: âWhy do adults care what we post on social media?â
Because, Sugar, people are always watching â especially the ones who hold the keys to your next opportunity.
Uncle Mel once checked a studentâs social media before helping her and found her page full of cursing and wild posts.
âI called her mom,â he said. âBecause employers and schools look at that too.â
Even when you delete it, itâs never really gone. Be the version of you that your future self will thank you for. đ đ˝
đ Sugar Q: âDo I really need math?â
Uncle Mel laughs â because he once flunked out partly from not understanding math. When he finally took a remedial course, it changed everything.
âMath teaches you how to slow down, pay attention, and solve problems â and thatâs what life is.â
đĄÂ The Tea: Â
Math isnât just about numbers â itâs about discipline. The same skill that helps you solve for x helps you solve for life.
đ Sugar Q: âIs smoking with my bae a bad idea?â
Letâs talk truth. Uncle Mel says it plain: âIf youâre underage, itâs illegal. Even if youâre of age, there are health and legal risks.â
But Auntie M adds some extra tea â sometimes when someone wants you to smoke or drink, itâs so youâll let your guard down. đ
Donât let anyone pressure you to do something that could cloud your judgment. Your ânoâ is still valid â sober or not.
đ Sugar Q: âDo I really have to go to college?â
Uncle Mel says yes â if it fits your goals.
âCollege gives you exposure â new people, new ideas, new standards.â
But he adds, âThere are many paths. If not college, get a trade, get certified, or perfect your craft.â
He calls it âwearing tomorrow todayâ â thinking about where you want to be in 10 years and preparing for it now.
đŞđžÂ Sugar Q: âWhat is discipline?â
âDiscipline is your daily motivation,â says Uncle Mel.
âItâs your ritual and routine â how you show up even when no oneâs watching.â
He calls it Wonât Power â not just willpower.
âItâs the power to say what you wonât do â I wonât quit, I wonât give up, I wonât let my goals go.â
đĄÂ The Tea:Â
You might not control what happens around you, but you control your routine, your mindset, and your response.
đ Simiâs Sip
Uncle Melâs story hits different â because itâs real. Messy start, strong finish.
He didnât let one setback define him, and neither should you.
Keep your circle solid, your goals clear, and your power intact. Youâre not just surviving DC â youâre setting the standard for it. đâ¨
Not a lecture, just a sip of tea. âđ
