Topic:Ā DC Roots, Real Talk, and Staying Out of Trouble

šĀ Sugar Q: āDC is crazy. My friend got shot. How do I stay out of trouble?ā
Whew, Sugar ā thatās real.
āYou canāt hang with everybody, baby,ā Denee said. āIf you know somebody doing wrong, and you stay around āem, youāre gonna get caught up in the mess.ā
She remembers growing up around the same streets ā the fights, the peer pressure, the chaos. āThatās why I stayed busy. I joined the dance team, took up braiding hair, anything to keep my hands moving and my mind focused.ā
š”Ā The Tea:
Staying busy isnāt lame ā itās how you stay free. Fill your time with something that feeds your spirit. āØ
š š¾Ā Sugar Q: āSo, how do I deal when people call me fake for changing?ā
Denee laughed. āLet āem talk! Growth donāt make you fake, it makes you focused.ā
She said when she started working and saving, some old friends thought she was āacting brand new.ā But Denee knew her path was bigger. āWhen youāre serious about your goals, the people who really love you will respect it.ā
š”Ā The Tea:
Evolving doesnāt mean youāve switched up ā it means youāre leveling up. š š¾
š¬Ā Sugar Q: āWhat if my mom doesnāt understand what Iām going through?ā
Denee sighed. āI love my mama, but we bump heads, too.ā
She explained that parents sometimes carry their own fears. āThey just want us safe. But you canāt shut down ā keep talking, even when itās hard. Write it down if you have to.ā
š”Ā The Tea:
Communication is care. Say what you feel, even if your voice shakes. ā¤ļø
šš½Ā Sugar Q: āYouāre always put together! Why does style matter so much to you?ā
āI always say ā look good, feel good,ā Denee said. āItās not about being fancy; itās about confidence. When I put on my outfit and fix my hair, Iām saying, āI showed up for me today.āā
She added, āItās DC ā you gotta represent where youāre from. We do everything with style.ā
š”Ā The Tea:
Confidence is an inside job, but a cute fit never hurts. š
šĀ Sugar Q: āHow do I keep my faith when the world feels so heavy?ā
āFaith got me through everything,ā she said. āEven when I didnāt know how things would work out, I prayed anyway.ā
Denee keeps a journal of things sheās grateful for ā big and small. āSome days I just write, āI woke up.ā Thatās enough.ā
š”Ā The Tea:
Faith isnāt about having it all figured out ā itās trusting that youāll be okay anyway. šš¾
šĀ Simiās Sip
You canāt control everything that happens around you, sugar ā but you can control your choices. Stay busy, stay hopeful, and keep choosing peace over pressure.
Youāre not missing out ā youāre leveling up.
Not a lecture, just a sip of tea.Ā āš
