đ Sugar Q: âAuntea, why are trades so important?â
âEveryoneâs not college material â and thatâs OK!â Auntea Martine said, smiling. âWeâve taken too many trades out of schools, and now young people donât have things to do with their hands â or their creativity.â
Thatâs why she created the MoRap Training & Sewing Academy â a space for DMV youth to learn sewing, entrepreneurship, and confidence. âI wanted to build something that helps our community create jobs, not just clothes.â
đĄÂ The Tea:
Learning a trade doesnât limit you â it builds your options. Whether youâre stitching, coding, or styling, skills open doors that school alone canât. âïž
đ Sugar Q: âHow did you become a designer?â
âI started modeling as a teen â back when DC still had department stores like Garfinkelâs and Woodyâs!â Martine laughed. âMy sister used to sew our outfits, and Iâd model them in shows. Thatâs really how it all started.â
Later, when she couldnât find a jumpsuit she loved, her husband said, âWhy donât you just create it?â That idea turned into her signature â the MoRap, a wrap garment that transforms into a jumpsuit, dress, or gown.
âI wear it almost every day and still find new ways to wrap it. Itâs functional and fabulous!â
đĄÂ The Tea:
Donât wait for permission to start your dream â tailor it yourself. đ
đȘĄ Sugar Q: âWhat advice would you give teen girls about school?â
âI wanted out fast,â Martine said, laughing. âSo I did high school in two years â taking night classes while everyone else was sleeping. But I learned something: donât rush through life just to be done.â
She encourages girls to say yes to opportunities, even the ones that scare them.
âI declined everything â student secretary, activities â and I wish I hadnât. If someone sees something in you, take it. Say yes.â
đĄÂ The Tea:
Fast-tracking isnât always the flex. Growth takes time â and you deserve the full experience. đ±
đŹÂ Sugar Q: âHow can I make good decisions when my friends want to go another way?â
âThink for yourself,â Martine said firmly. âYour friends donât always know more than you. Sometimes they want you to follow a path they took â but that doesnât mean itâs for you.â
She added, âFind at least one person you can talk to honestly â someone who wonât judge or ridicule you. And donât ignore that feeling in your gut when something doesnât sit right. Thatâs the Holy Spirit telling you, âWait, darling. Donât move yet.ââ
đĄÂ The Tea:Â
Real friends want to see you rise â not risk it all. Trust your instincts; theyâre your built-in wisdom. âš
đłïžÂ Sugar Q: âDoes my vote even matter?â
âYes, sugar, it does,â Auntea Martine said. âOur ancestors died trying to vote. If it didnât matter, people wouldnât work so hard to keep us from doing it.â
She reminds young people that voting is power â and staying informed matters.
âIt depends who youâre listening to,â she said. âFollow your heart and learn what issues affect your community. Young people are more powerful than they know.â
đĄÂ The Tea:Â
Change doesnât happen from the sidelines. Youâve got a voice â use it. đłïžâš
đ Sugar Q: âMy brotherâs in jail. How can I let him know I still care?â
âWrite him,â Martine said softly. âRemind him that God put something in him â something good. Everyone has a gift. Help him find his again.â
Martine and her husband run a radio show and nonprofit that support returning citizens. âToo many people come home after 20 or 30 years and donât have a path. We help them mentor others and find purpose again.â
đĄÂ The Tea:Â
Your love can be somebodyâs light. Never underestimate what one letter can do. đ
âSay it âtil you believe it. Iâm beautiful. Iâm worthy. Iâm enough.â â Auntea Martine
đ Simiâs Sip
You donât need to fit into anyoneâs box, sugar. You were handmade â stitched together with purpose. Keep showing up, learning, and loving yourself like itâs your full-time job.
Not a lecture, just a sip of tea. âđ
